We are not yet in the winter season (officially), but the rains and bad weather are already here. For this reason, today at Albergues del Camino we are going to tell you a little about what the experience of walking the Camino de Santiago is like at this time of year when cold, rain and snow can be present. Take note!
The Camino de Santiago in winter
If we are looking to live the Jacobean experience as it was originally lived (which has little or nothing to do with the current crowds), looking for a spiritual balance or simply a different adventure, doing the Camino in winter can be a great idea.
Of course, you should know that doing the Camino in winter is not easy, you have to be prepared to face bad weather, storms, wind and occasional snowfalls. In addition, you have to be willing to spend, perhaps, one or two days in a town, waiting for the weather to be better so that you can continue on your way.
It is also essential to go very well prepared with the right equipment and know at all times what awaits us at each stage.
Our recommendation is that, if it is the first time on the Camino de Santiago, wait a bit, as the weather will improve when spring arrives and it will still not be very crowded.
Take into account the snow
Doing the Camino de Santiago in winter is not dangerous, although it is true that we can find sections with snow. Clearly with snow the passage slows down and we become more clumsy, for this reason we must plan shorter stages than at other times of the year.
In addition, we have to take into account that in winter we usually leave the hostel earlier because although there are fewer daylight hours and we must make the most of them, it is also true that it takes longer for sunrise and enough light to make a safe walk. For this reason, it is essential to always carry a flashlight.
Accommodations for the Camino de Santiago in Winter
Most of the hostels on the Camino de Santiago close in winter, it is best to check which ones are open during the winter months. The French Way is the most prepared and in winter too. If you decide to do the Camino in winter staying in hostels, it is best to call and secure your place.
Now you know that doing the Camino de Santiago in winter is possible, the important thing is to walk with common sense, pay close attention to the weather forecast and plan the stages you are going to do very well.
